Charles Hottelman was born in Saxony-Anhalt, Prussia. He emigrated to America in his late 20s and settled in Wisconsin. Soon afterwards in 1849 he married Caroline (Carolina) Salomon in a union that would produce seven children. In 1851 he was a key figure in the founding of the village of Manitowoc.
He was almost certainly a trained brewer, as he is shown in the following years' census as already established, operating a brewery with two men on staff, one being what would be his ling-time partner Theodore Rudiger. The other, Albert Blatz, the brother of future Milwaukee brewery magnate Valentine Blatz. He ran the brewery for another 16 years until his death at age 46, on the 2nd of February 1866.
The brewery he founded then passed into the hands of George Kunz, whose family along with Daniel Bleser's guided the brewery to the next century. It eventually became the Manitowoc branch of the Kingsbury Breweries Co. and closed in 1949.
