This beautiful can (from a set of 18) was designed in 1977 by American artist Stephen R. Kidd, whose work has hung in both the White House and the Smithsonian. The buildings in this painting were accurately reproduced using period photographs and drawings as a reference. The front of this can shows the brewery shaded by tall oak trees. An aristocrat is being driven by on a carriage while a wagonload of beer is loaded.
Gustavus Bergner
Gustavus Bergner erected a brewery in Philadelphia in 1857, situated on Thompson Street below 32nd with a depot at 239 Dock Street. Bergner's vaults held 6,000 barrels containing 372,000 gallons of beer. Every winter the brewers of Philadelphia made 100,000 barrels of beer to be stored for the summer season. In 1879, the brewery became Bergner & Engel.
Through this series of Specially Commissioned signed artwork "The History Of American Breweries" we honor the men who created the brewing industry in this country. The Huber Brewery has brewed for this edition a CLASSIC BEER as it used to be.
