Wednesday, February 14, 1816   Johann Philipp Gast

Johann Philipp Gast was born in Asslar, Lahn-Dill-Kreis, Hessen, Germany. He was an early German emigree to America, coming to western Pennsylvania with his parents in the 1820s.

In 1859 he founded the Northside Brewery in Pittsburg. He was the sole proprietor of the brewery until 1871, when he handed off management responsibilities to his sons, Valentine and Friedrich. They operated the brewery as Gast & Bro until 1879. The firm underwent a number of ownership changes over the next decades and eventually was incorporated into the Pittsburgh Brewing Co. syndicate. Gast died on December 4, 1882. The brewery he started closed in 1899.
