Tuesday, November 11, 1845   Ernst C. Klinkert

Ernst C. Klinkert was born in Frankfurt am Main,.Prussia.  He learned the art of brewing in his native land then at the age of eighteen emigrated to America.  He worked at a brewery in St. Louis and Blatz in Milwaukee, then was hired to be brewer at Fred Heck's brewery in Racine, Wisconsin.  In 1877 Klinkert decided to branch out, and went into partnership with Philip Schelling in the City Brewery.

His brewery was successful.  After just two years Klinkert had surpassed his former boss in production and within ten years his firm was a well-known regional brewery.  By 1887 he was even selling his beer in Milwaukee.
