Peter Weirich was born in Todtenorth, Prussia. He emigrated to America in 1849. He first found work in Milwaukee, but within a year he had taken a job at Christopher Kusterer's brewery in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In 1855 he purchased property on Bridge Street and built the Michigan Brewery. He ran the firm for more than 30 years.
Peter Weirich died on April 1st, 1887. The brewery he founded carried his name for another six years. Beer-making operations ceased there in 1916.
