Gottlieb Heileman died at age 54. In 1878 it would have been impossible for him to imagine just what a behemoth the Heileman Brewery would become. Despite stiff competition in the early days, his little brewery in the bustling burg of La Crosse Wisconsin would grow to be a major player in the national brewing industry. 100 years after his death The G. Heileman Brewing Co. was one of the last ones standing after industry consolidation and corporate raiding brought the number of American breweries down from 766 in 1935 to just 101.
