  • Beer brands and recipes sold to G. Heileman Brewing Co. of Lacrosse, WI. For nearly three decades the grand Romanesque brewhouse laid vacant. It was threatened with demolition constantly as it's owners looked for a buyer. In 2006 it was sold and renovated and is now home to residential housing and retail establishments. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

John Orth Dies of Bay Fever he caught while visiting Algiers. In 1850 he founded what would become the Grain Belt Brewery in Minneapolis. He was 65 years old.
