This beautiful can (from a set of 18) was designed in 1977 by American artist Lowrey. The buildings were accurately reproduced using period photographs and drawings as a reference. The front of the can shows an arial view the sprawling factory in the blaze of summer.
Gottfried
Matheus Gottfried, a German brewmaster and inventor, came to America in 1857. He first worked at the Seip & Lehman Brewery for $16 a month, and in 1860 opened a small brewery with Peter Schoenhofen. Gottfried sold his interest in 1867 and in 1870 purchased the William Saladin Brewery at Archer and Stewart Streets. By 1882, the plant, renamed the Gottfried Brewing Co., was one of the largest breweries in America.
