Monday, January 17, 1859   Antone Castel

Antone Castel was born in Cologne, Germany.  He received his education in that country and had the fortune of learning English at a young age.  At age fourteen he joined the merchant marines and by age 20 he had circled the globe visiting every leading port in the world.  In 1879 he stepped off the boat in New York City and never went back on.

Castel moved west to Chicago, where he stayed for about a year before wanderlust again ovetook him, and once more he took to the road.  He became an extensive traveler of the United States.  Over the next few years he visited about every state and territory in the union.

Finally, in 1884 Castel made his way to Klamath Falls, Oregon where he found it home enough to put down roots.  He opened a livery stable in 1889 and married Miss Alpha Engle in 1894.

Castel's worldly experiences put him in high regard to the rest of the town and his navigation duties on the merchant ships planted an interest in surveying.  In 1892 he was elected county surveyor.  In 1897 Castel was appointed postmaster.

In 1903 Castel quit the livery business and purchased and renovated the vacant brewery once owned by John A. Verlings.  He ran the brewery for nine years before the pressures of the local temperance movement forced his business to close in 1912.

After closing the brewery, According to the August 5th Klamath Republican,"...Castel's mind appeared to be wandering at times. On one occassion he left home to go up town, and wandered for several days through the woods. After this he was taken to California by his wife."

On August 3rd, 1918 Antone Castel committed suicide by shooting himself.  He was 59 years of age.
