Peter Joseph Uedelhoven was born in Tondorf, Prussia.  In 1848 he married Gertrude Blindert and within months they emigrated to America.  They settled in Grant County Wisconsin where Peter built a brewery saloon in the town of British Hollow.  He ran the brewery until 1858 when he sold the firm to brewer Samuel Stephens and taverner William Mohrenburg.  Uedelhoven then moved to Dubuque to become a farmer. 

Some time in the 1870s Uedelhoven's daughter Catherine married into the Raab family to Christian Raab, a cooper. 

Peter Joseph Uedelhoven died on the 18th of March, 1897 at the age of 72.

The office of the brewery was used later as a VFW clubhouse.  Today it is used as a private residence. The lagering cave is all that remains of the brewery complex.

Samuel Stephens was born in Trevarvas, Breage, Cornwall, England.  He was five years old when his father died and when the estate was settled his siblings and mother pooled their inheritance and came to America.  They arrived in 1845 and settled in Grant County, Wisconsin, where they purchased a farm near Potosi.  

On the 20th of April, 1865, eleven days after the treaty at Appomattox, Samuel Stephens married Elizabeth Sarah Pedlar.  Pedlar was born in Potosi, but her parents had emigrated from England the same year as did Samuel.  Together they would have six children.

Stephens had probably been working in the brewery owned by Peter Joseph Uedelhoven in the township of British Hollow.  In around 1863 Stephens and William Mohrenburg (who was 15 years older than Stephens) purchased the brewery from Uedelhoven.  Stephens oversaw the brewing operations and Mohrenberg ran the saloon.  They ran the firm until 1872, after which Stephens became a farmer and Mohrenberg continued in the saloon business.

Stephens died on the 15th of September 1915 at the age of 78.

Henry Macke was born in Hanover, Germany.  He was one of two children born to Christian and Dorotha Macke (nee Vesperman).  At age 14 he came to America with his parents and brother.  They settled in Potosi, Wisconsin where they became farmers and butchers.

In 1872 Henry purchased the British Hollow brewery from Samuel Stephens and William Mohrenburg for $12,000.  He ran the brewery for ten years before selling it to Joseph Vogelberg.  Macke returned to farming in Potosi.

Henry Macke Sr. died on April 29th of 1924.  He was 81.

Joseph F Vogelsberg was born in Wisconsin.  On July 15 1880 he married Caroline "Lena" Kuester in Potosi, Wisconsin.  In 1882 he purchased the brewery in the nearby town of British Hollow, which he ran until about 1890.  He died on April 5th, 1934 at the age of 81 years.
